Casinos banned from Second Life

The group was very active today, as whole of Second Life probably, because Linden Lab announced on the official blog that all gambling activities are now forbidden !

We had a long discussion about it, discussing if it was advertisment for gambling, or gambling itself. Apparently gambling is now illegal in SL, as the US law makes online casinos illegal. One interesting point was the definition of gambling as "a game one have to pay to enter and which result is chosen randomly, and prize is L$". Some were really disapointed, because this definition also cover... sploders !

Apparently Linden Lab will close such places, and remove such objects. No evidence of such activities have been seen as no member was in a casino by this time. Anyway, casino only help you to loose money, not to earn ;-). I will report later on the closure or not of all casinos.

The post also mention that local laws are applicable, which is not so clear for anyone. Another point was to know if SL is more populated by US or non-US people, and the question of moving the Linden Lab servers somewhere else has been raised, with no satisfactory answer.

The single point on which all present group members did agree is that this could have a strong impact on SecondLife economy, but we all beleive that Second Life will survive it, and business will find another way...

I'm by far not a legal expert, so if I wrote any mistake down, please correct me. Any comment are welcome on this red hot topic !

This is a bit provocative, but if casinos have to shut down, there will still be the sex industry to continue Linden Lab business !

I disagree, I've earned quite a bit out of casinos...yeah, most of the machines were/are luck based, but not all of them were.

For example, the Mega Bonus Slot machines required you to pay them 10L$ to spin them once, then they would commence a number of camping cycles, for example, 5/12 for an hour, if you spun the machine once, that'd guarantee you 15L for the hour minimum, and that's excluding the chance of you getting any bonuses that either pay you immediately or give you bonuses for the camping.

In fact, I found a machine that stacked bonuses and took it from the base rate of 3/10 to 12/1, if you were to look for a dance pad like that you'd see a queue 50-long. Granted, the casino owner lost out considering the machine was broken enough not to originally pay me, but I got 2875 just out of a single machine, so the bank/casino certainly didn't win that time...and it's certainly better than acquiring 30L a day...

Thanks sylver for this comment. The line you quoted was definetly provocative.

Casinos could help you earning some money when campchairs are linked to a slot machine. But two restrictions apply here. First you have to withdraw the ammount you pay to activate the campchair, and usually, the camping time is then very limited. Not exactly practical for unsupervised long-term camping.

Now if you're an active player, and can resist the temptation playing all your money, just do camp and play the minimum to activate the campchair, you can certainly earn in SL casinos.

Now a few words about the 30 L$ a day. I fixed this minimal objective in the very begining of this quest. At this time I did not knew a lot of good campsites. My actual average is probably closer to 120 L$ a day...

Nevertheless, I keep the 30 L$ as a minimal, to have some objective that remain feasible on bad days as well.

Once again, thank you for participating in this blog.
